Hey there, my name is Benedict, I'm a Perth local.

Why

This site was created to improve upon an existing vergeside pickup map that was created by Matt McGlew in 2011. The map proved to be very popular, and at the time of writing has been viewed over 500,000 times. However, I saw an opportunity to improve upon this map in couple of ways:

• There was no search by date functionality in the map
• It was difficult to update the map with new information

I was looking for a small project (famous last words) that benefits the community to take on in my spare time and this seemed like a great match.

Data

The pickup dates and pickup areas has been pulled from individual council websites as well as from Nearmaps. The difficult part was determining pickup areas, especially for larger councils who don't provide a pickup map on their website.

Over time, more councils are moving to using skip bins instead of periodic vergeside pickups. Listed below are councils who do have vergeside pickups, along with a link to their webpage about bulk waste collection.

Etiquette

We live in a throwaway society and reusing things thrown out by others is a step in the right direction. However, there are some valid criticisms with collecting stuff from other people's verges. Some rules to abide by:

• Leave verges looking better than you found them. Don't leave a mess, keep things stacked neatly.
• Don't needlessly destroy working products (e.g. cutting off power leads). If you are going to drive around cutting off power leads, wait until the last day before collection starts.
